November 9 Cleanup Volunteers

Did you know there is a natural oasis right here on campus?

Waller Creek is an urban watershed that runs from North Austin through the city and campus into Lady Bird Lake downtown. Even though it's in the middle of the city, the creek is home to a great diversity of wildlife. From the Great Blue Heron to the Roseate Skimmer Dragonfly, many types of animals rely on the creek habitat for survival. But being an urban watershed means that Waller Creek suffers many pollution problems too. Trash from the streets washes down storm drains and into the creek. Sometimes people even dump large items into the creek so they don't have to pay for disposal. This pollution can adversely affect the wildlife, water quality, and beauty of Waller Creek.

What can you do?

Participate in the Waller Creek Cleanup!

The Waller Creek Cleanup is held twice a year and is sponsored by Environmental Health and Safety and Texas Memorial Museum.

Register for the cleanup on:
April 11th, 9:00-11:30


Thanks to all the volunteers who helped make our November 9 cleanup a huge success!

Volunteers removed approximately 1,581 lbs. of material pulled out of the creek!

  • 88 bags of trash at approx. 1,328 lbs.
  • 7 bags of recycling at approx. 73 lbs.
  • (6) 5-gal pails of scrap metal, broken glass, misc. sharps (avg. 20 lbs.) 180 lbs.

In addition to bulky non-bagged items such as:

  • A shopping cart (mandatory at every clean up)
  • (most of) a plastic kiddie swimming pool
  • (2) collapsible tail gating chairs
  • Parts of 2 different camp stoves
  • Hubcaps from both a Toyota and a VW
  • A large green tarp
  • A sleeping bag or 2 (also mandatory)
  • Lengths of pipe, both pvc, and clay
  • And an ice chest that was claimed for re-use!
